Fractional CTO
Part-time technical leadership for SMEs and industry. Architecture, software and hardware choices, security, and the people or suppliers who build.
From one day a month to two days a week, temporary or ongoing. With more than 16 years of experience in software, IoT and hardware running in production.
When a fractional CTO fits
- Software has become important to the business, but nobody inside oversees the technology.
- Developers or suppliers build, and nobody can review their choices.
- Machines, installations or remote devices need to be managed, updated and secured.
- Large customers, the Dutch Cybersecurity Act or a certification ask for demonstrable security.
- There is a choice between buying, having it built or building in-house, and that choice still has to hold in five years.
What we do
Direction and architecture
A technical plan that fits the business goals, with choices that can be explained to management and team.
- Architecture of software and systems
- Buy, have it built or build in-house
- Technical debt mapped, with a plan to reduce it
- Your data and code stay yours, without vendor lock-in
Team and suppliers
Direction for whoever builds, in-house or external, with clear agreements on quality and delivery.
- Reviewing supplier quotes and plans
- Guiding developers and code reviews
- Hiring technical people
- Handover so knowledge does not stay with one person
Security and evidence
Security that works and can be demonstrated, to customers, regulators and the board.
- ISO 27001 and NEN 7510 as the framework
- Preparing for the Dutch Cybersecurity Act and questions from large customers
- Sign-in with passkeys and YubiKeys
- Recorded in an ISMS that is kept up to date
IoT and hardware
From prototype to a fleet of devices in the field, with connectivity and remote management.
- Hardware prototyping including connectivity
- Sensors, I/O and embedded Linux
- Remote management, updates and logging of installations
- CAD and a digital twin of the installation
AI in the work
AI that takes over recurring work, on servers in the EU, with measurement of what it delivers.
- Where AI pays off and where it does not
- Your own AI environment in the EU
- Measured daily against known outcomes
In practice
Three examples of technical leadership we provided.
- Hydrogen installations
- Technical leadership for a maker of hydrogen installations: control and monitoring, remote management of the installations over 4G, and hardware prototyping including connectivity.
- Factory and process
- Tech lead at a maker of doors and partition walls with more than 100 employees: product development, an integration with Exact Online and IoT in the factory, with in-house developers and external partners.
- Regulated finance
- Architecture and integrations at a real estate lender supervised by the Dutch AFM, where every change had to be traceable and customer data protected.
How it works
- 1
Introduction
A 30-minute conversation about where the business stands and what is going on. Free of charge.
- 2
Current state
In the first weeks we map the technology, the suppliers and the risks. That leads to a plan with priorities.
- 3
Fixed days
Then fixed days per week or per month, with a short report of what was decided and done. The scope is agreed in advance and can scale up or down.
Technical leadership without a full-time CTO
It starts with a conversation, not with code. Clarity in technical decisions, from the first week.
