What does a digital twin cost
An amount without context is worth nothing, so you will not find one here. What you will find is what determines the price, where the money usually goes, and how to start a twin small. At the end are the questions you must answer to get a quote.
What determines the price
The Digital Twin Consortium's definition names two dials: how often the twin refreshes and how precise it is. Together those two determine most of the cost.
- The number of objects: one line or a whole factory.
- The data sources and their protocols: one PLC through OPC UA is different from ten systems from five suppliers.
- The refresh rate: every second needs a different infrastructure than every hour.
- Simulation: only watching, or also calculating what happens if you change something.
- Management: who keeps the model up to date when the factory changes.
Where the money usually goes
Not into the 3D model. Most of the work is in the integrations and in the quality of the data. A sensor that is not what the drawing says, a PLC tag named differently than expected, a schedule that lives on paper. Whoever budgets a twin, budgets mostly that.
How to keep it small

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a 3D scan first?
No. For most properties the dimensions and a short description are enough to build a model. A scan only helps when the exact shape of the building affects the decision.
Can I start without live data?
Yes. Then you have a model you walk through and calculate variants in. You connect the data once you know which decision you want to make with it.
What does maintenance cost?
That depends on how often your factory or property changes. Because the model is built from a recipe, a change is usually an edit of that recipe, not redrawing the model.
